Chevy Equinox Gas Mileage

The Chevrolet Equinox first appeared on the scene in 2004 for the upcoming 2005 model year. This was Chevrolet's answer to replace their smaller SUV, the Tracker. The Equinox was not only the replacement for the Tracker, but was also Chevrolet's way of entering the smaller crossover SUV that was becoming popular. The reason is that main competitors such as Chrysler, Mazda and other automakers were coming out with their own crossovers, and the public was taking notice, purchasing these vehicles to replace their gas guzzlers.

The gas mileage of the Chevrolet Equinox is probably the main reason why this vehicle is such as good seller for the company. The first generation of the Chevrolet Equinox contains the model years from 2005 to 2009. The second generation begins with the 2010 models. The gas mileage for the Equinox as a whole is anywhere from 32 miles per gallon to 25 miles per gallon depending on whether the person is driving on highways or in town. In addition, Chevrolet says that the Equinox can go six hundred miles in between fill ups, which is outstanding for a crossover, and some of the best figures yet for any crossover.

What gives the Equinox its amazing gas mileage? For one, it is equipped with a small V6, however, that does not relinquish any power that the vehicle has. In fact, it takes off rather fast for a crossover when put up against other vehicles that are similar, such as Chrysler. Secondly, the tires are what people consider to be low rolling resistance, meaning that your tires are not having to work harder when you drive faster, which does not burn as much fuel.

The Equinox also came out with a fuel cell version of the crossover. This helped increase gas mileage significantly. However, there were only about one hundred that were produced since they do need to use hydrogen fuel stations. And since these stations are not everywhere that would make owning one of these particular types of Equinox's a bit hard. They were mainly sold to those who live in California, since California has around 23 of these hydrogen stations in place and functioning.

On top of the excellent fuel mileage, the Equinox is also easy on the eyes. And is often termed one of the best looking cross over SUV's out there. It looks elegant, yet still has plenty of room for functioning in everyday life. Safety features of the Equinox also make it popular with consumers. The 2011 Equinox has yet to be tested for safety to give ratings, however, since it is almost identical to the 2010 models, it would be fine to think that it should score the same if not better than the 2010 model. For 2010, the Equinox was given five out of five stars in regard to frontal and side crashes. In the rollover testing, the Equinox was given four out of five stars, which is above average for an SUV to score so high. In fact for 2010, it was an Institute for Highway Safety Top Pick in regard to safety. Perhaps one of the reasons that it is considered such a safe vehicle has to do with the on board On Star that is available in Chevrolet vehicles only and reports to authorities if there is every an accident to get them to the vehicle as soon as possible. In addition, the vehicle contains front passenger air bags and headrest curtain air bags for everyone's safety. An option safety aspect is to have a camera installed on the rear of the vehicle that shows exactly what is behind you should you be having trouble reversing and could warn the driver ahead of time of any impending accident.

Overall, the Equinox has the looks and the safety features that people want. However, the most alluring aspect about the vehicle is the gas mileage that it gets. Not many people can downgrade to a smaller vehicle in order to save gas, which is why those people that need room end up having to get an SUV or a crossover. With the Equinox they do not have to settle for paying hundreds more a month just on gas in order to fit their family. This is why the Equinox will probably once again be one of the best selling crossovers for yet another year.
