Aerodynamic Cars Taking Over
The idea of making a car as aerodynamic as possible is back. It was in the 1980s that most people first start to notice that most automakers were using aerodynamics to the best of their abilities in order to encourage better fuel economy from the cars that they are making. Well, the idea is back as more and more rules are laid out for the automakers that want higher mile per gallon vehicles. So where are automakers going to be getting their ideas from? Most are only going to have to look at their past history of cars and other competitors cars to see where they should be going.
For example, the Ford Taurus of the eighties, was one of the cars that was aerodynamic at its best. Most professionals in the business thought the car was nothing to be excited about, however, Ford was the one who walked away with one of the best selling cars of all time with this option. Also, take the Toyota Prius as a great example, the nose of the car is lower to the ground and the undercarriage of the car is sealed which prevents the wind and air from holding the car back which could use more power in the long run.
Right now, Ford has introduced the shutters that are able to open and close to allow for more air to pass through when needed. This is allowing the cars that are utilizing these to get the aerodynamics and fuel savings that is needed while also allowing for the engine to get the cool down that it needs. Another aspect that most automakers are utilizing is making sure that the rear end of the cars that they are producing are rounded in order to allow for better gas mileage since the air will flow over the car, instead of pushing against it, which means less gas used for figuring on wind resistance.
