Back Up Cameras to Become Mandatory

The recent news stories that are covering accidents involving children getting ran over by cars that are reversing is being looked at by the government. Their response is installing rear view cameras in vehicles in order for drivers to see those small children that are behind them. The government is wanting these back up cameras to be installed in every vehicle, and they expect the transition to be completed by 2014.

In regard to cost to the customer, the government has estimated that each vehicle will increase by around $200 to the customer. However, in regard to the safety of children, this is a small amount to pay.

According to statistics, in a given year there are over 18,000 injured and 300 that are killed when drivers accidentally reverse into these people. Half of these numbers are children that are under the age of five years old.

This offer is expected to be reviewed by automakers and they should reach a response at the beginning of next year. However, the odds of the automakers accepted the proposal seems to be high as automakers are trying to do everything that they can in order to ensure safety in their vehicles. Some automakers have already added rear back up cameras onto their vehicles, and deem them as necessary safety equipment that no one should be without. Parents are encouraging the government to make this a law for automakers to abide by, as there is nothing more horrible than losing a loved one because the driver could not see the child when they reversed.

The new rule if accepted by everyone will apply to these vehicles that weigh up to 10,000 pounds. The cameras are supposed to be able to detect children or objects that are twenty feet behind the vehicle and at least five feet to the right and left of the vehicle. This could be the one of the best rules that the government has placed on automakers in the past few years, and will be widely accepted by the public.
