Ford, Nissan and Turkish Company Compete for Taxi Job
Two of the biggest car automakers in the American market are going head to head trying to win a deal that includes the delivery of over 13,000 new vehicles with New York city for taxis. Nissan and Ford are both trying to win the deal, while there is a third competitor, a lesser known Turkish manufacturer also being considered. In addition, the winner will also snag a ten year contract with the city.
So why are these three manufacturers trying so hard to get this deal? It has little to do with the fact that the fleet number is huge, which it means that this will definitely be a money maker for them. However, all three companies are considering just how much having a deal with the New York City cabs will put them in the public eyes. Consider the amount of people that visit New York and nearly who take cabs. Having them step out of a Ford, Nissan or a Karsan, the Turkish brand, is going to make them remember the brand. Perhaps, because of this they begin to draw in more customers, thus earning even more money. Plus, you can never have enough good publicity.
So what can we expect for these manufacturers to be pushing for taxis? Most would assume that they would be using some of the top selling cars to push as taxis, however, that is not the case. Each brand is pushing a converted van as the option for a taxi. In fact, Ford has went so far as to say that they would produce an electric version of their van for the city if they are chosen. This is a huge appeal for the city since everyone is trying to cut down on carbon emissions, plus, the added bonus of being known as the first city to employ electric taxis is also a huge plus.
New York City is expected to make their decision by the end of this year. Meanwhile, all three automakers are sitting with their fingers crossed.
