NHTSA Opens Up New Investigations

New investigations are underway from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that could affect up to 700,000 vehicles in the United States. And those vehicles being affected are offered by three major auto makers in the industry, Nissan, General Motors and Chrysler.

The NHTSA is investigation the Nissan Altima that are the 2007 and 2008 models. According to their figures, this could mean around 440,000 affected vehicles. The problem that has been reported is braking failure. With many complaints stating that they had decreasing braking power and others reporting that the brake lights illuminated on the dashboard for no apparent reason. Though, they are connected these problems to a leak in the master brake cylinder that is causing these problems. Twenty complaints have been received into the NHTSA.

2007 and 2009 models of the Chrysler Jeep Wrangler are also being looked into by the agency. Which has the potential to affect around 222,500 vehicles. With the Wrangler it seems that the air bag light is illuminating that could mean that the air bag has a broken circuit, if this is the case, then it could mean that the air bag would not deflate in the event of a crash. There has been 29 complaints received with the same problem being identified.

The final investigation is on the 2007 Saturn Aura made by GM. This is said to affect about 65,000. The problems seem to be with the gear shift, and the fact that when in park the vehicle could still roll. Around eight complaints have been received.

With all three investigations, there has been no reported injuries or deaths. They are simply investigating the many complaints that they are getting on the vehicles in question. A spokes person for the NHTSA said that all three auto makers are actively helping in the investigation to get down to the root of the problems and get these fixed as soon as possible to ensure that they are safe vehicles.
