Rotating Production Considered in Japan

Toyota is at a point in which they are trying to figure out what to do with the company due to the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan a few weeks ago. Because of the damage, the electricity that serves the area is going in and out, with some people still not having any electricity at all. One of the ways in which Toyota is trying to deal with this situation is through rotating production, which they hope will save energy in the long run.

This is a good idea according to many since it would allow Toyota to keep producing some vehicles, while not using all the energy that the area has to offer. However, it is still under consideration as they figure if this would actually work or not. One thing is for certain, these automakers are trying every which way that they can in order to keep up production since they have all had to stop production due to damage that was sustained during the tsunami and earthquake.

So far Toyota has lost around 140,000 units of production since the earthquake hit and caused all the damage. Those automakers that produce in Japan are supposed to meet later this week in order to determine if they can work out some kind of rotation schedule that is going to make everyone happy. It may not give them the numbers that they were producing beforehand, but at least they would be producing something and the workers would have a little paycheck coming to them.

However, conflict may occur as the automakers try to sort out a schedule, if they can at all. As this is usually the case with such things. But, it is a great idea that automakers should be jumping on. In doing this, at least they would be getting a few units produced instead of sitting back with nothing to show for it.
