Porsche Will Offer Sports Hybrids

The debate of Porsche introducing a new hybrid sports car had been an interesting one in the past – leaving environmentally conscientious Porsche lovers wishing for it, and the rest of the car enthusiasts waiting to see if it happens. The prestigious automaker has not been clear in the past of its true intentions, but now it seems that Porsche will offer a sports hybrid after all. Porsche has hybrid SUV's, but not a true sports hybrid. However, it seems that according to the Development Chief Wolfgang Duerheimer, Porsche is planning to have a hybrid version of every model in its line for the future. Will this happen? It waits to be seen.

According to recent news, it seems that a hybrid version of the popular 911 sports car will be offered on four cylinder models only. The hybrid version of the 918 Spyder has been in development and manufacture, and there is a waiting list for it – as many as 900 buyers that seem to be interested, and might get the hybrid Spyder by 2012. This hybrid version will have fuel efficiency and will be able to go from 0-60 in 3.2 secs. It is a 4-wheel drive plug-in sports hybrid that will perform at 718 horsepower.

The attractive and eco friendly model was shown in Geneva. Porsche decision seems to come from the pressure the European government is putting in lowering CO2 emissions. The company seems to be responsive to the call and will consider four cylinder models if necessary to contribute to lowering emissions.

Another way in which Porsche is thinking about helping the environment is by manufacturing cars with carbon fiber material bodies, which will be lighter in weight. However, Porsche will not compromise in performance and cutting edge design, as this is what the company seems to be about, doing otherwise will be denying the true Porsche spirit.

It will be interesting to see where this company heads in the future of eco friendly vehicles, and how Porsche lovers and enthusiasts receive these models.
