Chrysler to Idle Some Plants in June

Chrysler is going ahead and scheduling its summer shut downs a bit earlier this year than most have expected. The earlier time frame is to make the supplies that they have lasted a bit longer since they do get some of their supplies from the companies that were affected by the earthquake in Japan. Most of these companies are stating that they should be up and running by July or August if everything works out as planned.

Most US automakers usually shut down their plants for a week or two during the summer time anyway. This is to get ready for the next model year, changing out the tools and so forth that are being used to help make the new vehicles. However, Chrysler has decided that instead of doing this in July, they are going to up this shut down to June. The plants being affected are those that make pickup trucks and SUV's. They have no plan yet for their car manufacturing plants.

These plants are going to shut down the weeks of June 20th or June 27th, or perhaps both if they need this extra time to make sure that they have the supplies needed to make this work. However, their plant in Mexico is not shutting down, but is eliminating the overtime that they had scheduled in an effort to save the parts and prolong the plants as long as they can.

This should not affect production too bad, as this is something that more than likely they would have done anyway, since they usually shut down plants for a few weeks on a normal basis. And workers, should not be too upset since they are getting ample time to figure out their financial settings and so forth before the time comes that they are without work for a week or two. It is just something that needs to be done in order to keep their momentum going.
