Ford Recalls F-150’s for Airbag Problem

Ford has announced that they will be recalling around 144,000 of the 2005 and 2006 models of the F-150 truck for an air bag problem. The F-150 is still considered one of the best selling trucks in all of the United States, which means that the recall number is not as bad as it could be. According to Ford, the air bags could deploy without being involved in an accident and could deploy while driving down the road.

The problem started at the Virginia factory in which the F-150's were manufactured. According to the research that Ford has done, the air bag wire in the steering wheel is becoming pinched, which is breaking the wire or the wire is simply become short circuited, just as it would if involved in an accident, causing the air bag to deploy.

There has been no numbers of the times that this has occurred or the accidents that have been caused by this problem. However, Ford did state that they were aware of one accident in which the driver jumped from the truck in their driveway after the air bag deployed just sitting there. For those that have had their air bag deployed, there should be a light on the dash that indicates service is needed, and they should take it to their nearest Ford dealership.

The company has said that they are already issuing those that own a F-150 from the 2005 and 2006 year that were manufactured at the Norfolk, Virginia plant recalls in order to warn them of the potential problem with their vehicle and make arrangements for the person to bring the truck in. Ford has said that they expect the re installation of a new air bag wire to take around half a day and the charge will be covered by the Ford Motor Company.

Before everyone runs to their nearest Ford dealership, Ford is stating that there are only a few of the F-150 models affected, these seem to have been manufactured on the first shift at the Norfolk plant.
