Hybrid Vehicles Not As Popular As Hoped

Though the hype for the hybrid vehicles that are being offered by domestic and foreign automakers seem to be taking over the news, the reality is that many consumers are still not interested in purchasing one of these electric and gas combo cars. Why? Perhaps price is an issue, or the fact that electric energy bills keep rising, so in all actuality, people wonder if they will be able to save any money with owning an electric car.

In order to combat what seems to be no interest in these vehicles, the government has stepped forward and bought a small percentage of the hybrid vehicles that are being sold. In the past two years, the government has purchased around 10% of those hybrid cars that have been sold by automakers. This amounts to approximately, 145,473 vehicles that are hybrids that are begin used in government jobs.

As for the new all electric cars that are being released, the government has already said that they plan to purchase many of these vehicles since the hybrid market is on its third year of declining sales. However, many professionals believe that in order for the public to take further notice into the hybrid market that gas prices are going to have to significantly increase, which could be a possibility with the way that the economy is right now.

So what lesson can be learned from these statistics? Just because the government is pushing the acceptance of these cars, the public has a mind of its own. Will these cars ever be accepted? Perhaps in the future, however, some people will simply not drive a hybrid due to their size. As technology becomes more advanced and automakers use this technology to develop bigger hybrid vehicles, we may see an increase in the public demand for these vehicles. Until then, it looks like the government will be purchasing the majority of these vehicles.
