Nissan Issues Recalls

Nissan is recalling around 600,000 vehicles in South and North America, as well as Africa. This is due to two separate problems. One dealing with the steering of the vehicle and the other dealing with battery cable problems.

According to Nissan, the steering recall is affecting approximately 303,000 Frontier pickups and 283,000 Xterra vehicles in the US, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and other Latin countries. Nissan said that the problem is being caused by corrosion on the column joint, which could make the vehicle hard to steer and in some extreme cases, lead to the cracking of the column joint.

Around 18,500 Sentra's are being recalled due to a battery cable problem that could make the vehicle difficult to start or may cause it to stall at low speeds. The company has reported that there has been no injuries associated with these recalls.

The Frontiers that are being recalled are from 2002- 2004 models, and were manufactured from July 9, 2001 to October 20, 2004. These were manufactured in Smyma, Tennessee. The 2002 through 2004 Xterra's made in this plant are also included in the recall. Also, many of the vehicles during roughly the same time period that were made in Brazil are also included in this list.

Nissan has said that they plan to contact owners in December of when they can bring in their vehicle to have it fixed, at no cost to them. According to the company, there has been no reports of these recalls causing problems for those located in the United States, however, to be on the safe side they are also including the US vehicles.

In the US alone, only about 240,000 Frontiers, 261,000 Xterra's and 14,000 Sentra's are being affected by the recall. Given that this is not a major malfunction of the vehicle that has caused injuries or death, this is most likely not going to affect the sales of Nissan.
